Things I do in Davos

When you train really hard there are no real need for entertainment or activities on the side. Occasionally when a day off coincidence with some excess energy there are things to do here that are really cool. Taking one (of  many) mountain cableways  to a top of a mountain is probably on top of the list. Going out for a meal or post training breakfasts is also nice, but limited as prices up here are through the roof.

So what are the top three activities for a hard training athlete in Davos?

Down below I have listed my favorite things to do when your legs are smashed and energy limited.

1. Grocery shopping

Oh well, what beats a good trip to the grocery store? I seem to endlessly drag bags of shopping back to my studio apartment. I’m not sure where everything goes as I’m also trying to watch my weight. But guess it’s hard work to stay on top of a fridge well stocked with  mushrooms, fresh fruit and low calorie drinks…

Top three shops:

a) Migros. Somewhat decent prices, great walnut and potatoe(?!) bread and a good coffee selection.

b) Bakerys. Any of the bakerys here will do. Fresh crusty bread in endless variation. Heaven for a breadlover!

c) The big Coop at Davos Platz. For bigger shops. But dangerous as I always come back home with much more than what was on my list… Also spent a decent amount of money on a mocka press there last week.

2. Balcony sitting

This is another wicked activity that doesn’t require a lot of energy. It’s always right there, it provides a good scenery and great for recovery. Only minus is the very loud stream that runs underneath. Makes you start to look for the “volume control”… So whats the best things to do while balcony sitting?

a) Afternoon coffee. Nothing is better than a pre run coffee in the afternoon sun. The high altitude also provides good tanning opportunities.

b) Internet surfing. Yes, it is possible to pick up wireless internet out here. Sometimes.

And you better enjoy it before it disconnects…

But the pleasure of overlisiting the overprices Swisscom pay as you go is wort the hassle. And the cold

3. TV watching

A good classic activity. But staying in a german spoken country has it downsides as everything is dubbed to german! Even the MTV shows… So what do I watch..?

a) CNN is a standard choice for breakfasts. Unfortunately there are only so many times you can watch “the headlines” and “backstorys” per day before you go mental.

b) Various cycling races. Who needs to hear the commentary anyways? Tour de Suisse is a favorite right now. And I’m very much looking forward to the start of Tour de France.

c) Soaps. There is no better way to get to know the culture you live in than to watch it soaps. Lederhosen, flower fields, cheese and cows. All the typical Swiss ingredients are there together with the normal drama of love, death and various family affairs.

So as you now understand the excitement we experience when we go away to a race. The travel, the people, the café life, everything is very overwhelming! But the quiet life definitely has it’s benefits to training.

If there was something I learnt from the Kenyans in Iten last year it was the value doing nothing. I’m still on a learning curve but eventually I’m hoping to perfect the art of resting.
